“Embracing Worlds“ trilogy, which began
in 2004 with “Sulamith & Maria“ and
continued in 2008 with “Eurasia“. This
album is conceived as a voyage,
reassembling impressions gathered while
traveling through Europe and steadily
eastward toward the gateways of Asia,
moving ever deeper into the
conflict-scarred border regions between
the Western and Eastern world.

These two cycles, "II: Conversion" and
"III: Continuance", both combined on one
album, are forming the keystone of
AUTUMN's "Magenta Emerald" trilogy. This
journey into the psyche is orientated to
the concept of development novels:
Different layers of personalities,
emotional worlds and live models are
merged in one fictional person, who is
developing by the search for sense.
While "Part I: Crisis" has been about
the creation of the protagonist Magenta
Emerald and the description of that
fictitious and indefinable north sea
island on which she meets Mondrian, the
alter ego of the author Morus himself,
"Part II: Conversion" describes the
protagonist's independence from the
poet's dreaming. With the
materialization of the protagonist
Utopia is becoming an unreachable and
abstract idea, and caused by this change
the worldly problems are arising. While
"Conversion" tells of repulsion,
isolation and the long way to mutual
respect concerning the persons on that
fictitious island, "Part III:
Continuance" is a musical
crystallization of the elements, which
result of Magenta Emerald's search for
sense.
A mélange of music theatre and song
cycle combining modern, classical and
traditional sounds - a journey into
the psyche, a collection of poetic
soundscapes, ,written and essentially
recorded on the North Sea islands
Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog.

Based on Wolfram von Eschenbach's
ancient epos this musical cycle combines
ambient atmospheres, classical and
medieval instruments with recitations of
the original verses to create a
collection of mystic and poetic
soundscapes. A musical universe full of
melancholy, which moves into a
neo-classical fantasy. |

The central idea of this concept album
is to lay emphasis on the indivisibility
of two cultural complexes - Occident and
Orient - as it is well-founded in the
union both continents are forming. It is
a mélange of ideational roots within a
cycle by using different European and
Asian influences and languages - some
kind of musical journey. |

AUTUMN was founded on a walk through
autumnally forests in October 1984 and
within the following two years the music
& art circle laid the stylistic
foundations until a first performance
and a first album length release
concluded that period. Two decades later
the members retired again for several
days for the beginning of another two
years of self reflection, search and
discussion for preserving and renewing
the artistic contents and aims. The
result has been this album, which means
a guideline to the circle's work for the
future by concentrating on stylistic
reflection, search and reformation -
including also a few newly interpreted
versions of personal mile stones of
musical development. |

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary
of the collective AUTUMN the members met
in autumn of 2004 for several days on a
castle near Nuremberg to lay the
foundation stone for the jubilee
releases. The place was chosen
carefully. Because on walking-tours in
the forests surrounding the castle
Ludwig Tieck and W.H. Wackenroder have
been inspired for their first writings
that once started European Romantic,
which art ideals are also defining the
basics of the collective that is
dedicated to this cultural stream and to
its further development.
Furthermore the place is a reminiscence
to the beginnings of Autumn on a similar
journey to this autumnally forest land
twenty years ago. Again the aims of the
collective and the possibilities of
artistic work have been discussed and
there has been a lot of music making and
experimenting. The results are
recordings of numerous titles: the
foundation for a new forthcoming album
and the blueprint for the two jubilee
EPs.
In conjunction to the name of the
project the basic idea for the two EPs
was a classical theme: The setting to
music of the four seasons. So EP 1 deals
with the emotions of spring and summer
and EP 2 of autumn and winter to capture
them in a nearly pantheistic form. Again
bridges between styles are built. These
also lyrical different aspects - again
different languages from the orient and
occident are used - are combined under
the title 'La sanktigo de la …' for
which the artificial language Esperanto
has been chosen consciously. |

The cycle 'Magenta Emerald' - developed
as trilogy - is a journey into the
psyche and its contents are orientated
to the concept of development novels of
the idealism: Different layers of
personalities, emotional worlds and live
models are merged in one fictional
person, who is developing by the search
for sense - but here contrary to the
classical examples without the goal of a
morally defined and precise ideal.
Musically "Magenta Emerald" is a mixture
of music theatre and song cycle. The
first part "Crisis" is about the
adolescent longing for an Utopia, but it
is also about doubts and faithlessness
caused by the impossibility of those
unrealizable illusions. And this
contradiction in terms contains the
central topic - the inner turmoil. The
scenery is a fictitious coastal
landscape, reduced to the essential. The
never ending struggle of the extremes
sea and land is used as a symbol of this
inner conflict. Morus, the narrator of
the story, dreams of his final and
perfect Utopia, absolutely isolated from
the world outside. In the first part the
central figure, Magenta Emerald, tries
to escape from that inner turmoil, but
the protagonist becomes independent and
she embroils the poet himself into the
plot. So the dreamer is no more master
of his dreams, at the end his Utopia
fails and an indescribable ideal arises,
an abstract and very private Utopia,
which already fulfils itself in one's
imagination. So there is no description
of a perfect state like Plato or Thomas
Morus did, but a single individual is
shown under the impression of inner
turmoil and brittleness of our time - in
this case Magenta Emerald - who
develops, passing ways and meanders, as
a representative for a world model. |

The concept album 'Sulamith & Maria'
is about the international situation of
this incipient 21st century, it is an
answer to the increasing polarization
between Occident and Orient, which is
driven forward by fanatics on both
sides. Since two members of the ensemble
of those recordings spent their
childhood and youth in the Orient, it is
also a journey into the personal past -
the theme of inner strife, living in
between two societies. The central
request has been to unite these two
cultural complexes in their ideational
roots within this cycle - a dialog of
ideas, proceeding from the texts of
Jalal ad-Din Rumi and Hildegard von
Bingen. Around this central spiritual
love poetry written by those European
and Asian mystics who admonished for
tolerance, some own lyrical sketches are
ranking, concerning with the fusion of
those different and although relative
cultures. The cycle has been completed
by poems of the European Romanticism,
because this artistic movement has
examined at the art of the Orient for
the first time in later European history
with a great sense of equal rights and
without any illusion of self-superiority
and has been influenced by this. The
idea of the union of the cultural areas
is also reflected by the choice of old
and new European and Asian languages,
sung and spoken by very different
voices. The cycle 'Sulamith & Maria'
means a signal, and so we follow the
words of the romantic artist Friedrich
Overbeck, who has painted the
programmatic identically titled picture:
"It is my task to merge those two
elements which are facing each other. On
the one hand is the memory of the native
country and on the other hand the
attraction of the marvellous and
beautiful which I enjoy in the presence.
This means the longing which the north
drags on to the south constantly - its
art, its nature, its poetry." |
